Lorry runs over man, mob torches quarry office

TIRCHY: Villagers torched the sand quarry office following the death of a lorry driver, when another lorry carrying sand ran over him, here on Tuesday.It is said, while Kathan (55), a lorry driver from Thiruvanaikoil was run over when the sand lorry was moving in the reverse direction. Kathan died on the spot. His irate kin and the public ransacked the sand quarry office and torched it. It was reduced to ashes.The public also blocked the road resulting in a traffic jam in the area. On information, a police team held talks with the residents. Subsequently, they dispersed from the spot. It is said that there had been a duel between the sand quarry authorities and the local sand lorry owners as the quarry was selling sand only to lorries from other districts for a higher price.
