New Delhi: The World Health Organisation's latest global road safety report has brought forth some disturbing facts including the fact that India is home to world's largest number of road deaths.
The recent death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde in a road accident in which he suffered no external injuries and reports suggested his cause of death due to shock suffered by his liver and spinal cord has only raised the worry.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan emphasises the importance of seat belt while travelling in car as he says, "I want to appeal to countrymen. Please take seat belt as your friend."
In wake of the alarming concern regarding road safety, following are some dos and don'ts for citizens:
Dos
-Always wear seat belts
- Use child seats for children below 4 years
- Give right of way to pedestrians
- Allow emergency vehicles like ambulances to pass first
- Slow down while approaching an intersection
- Always drive in your lane
Don'ts
- Never drive if you are below the age of 18
- Never park on busy roads
- Never use mobile phones while driving
- Never cross the speed limit on city roads
- Never jump a red light
- Never drink and drive
Even as citizens follow the above norms, the authorities too need to do their part. Following are some suggestions that could prevent road accidents:
- Enforce strict ban on mobile phone usage while driving
- Keep strict check on violation of speed limits
- Stop overloading of passengers and goods
- Road safety should be a compulsory school subject
- Roads should be properly maintained & lane discipline be enforced
- Number of multi-lane roads should be increased
- Separate lanes for fast & very fast moving vehicles
- Streamline grant of driving licenses and permits
- Punitive punishment for drunk driving
