COIMBATORE: A school dropout from Coimbatore, Iniyavan, famed for preparing idlis at houses of VIPs during special occasions, has applied for patent for 20 varieties of the dish.“In the first phase, the application for seven varieties was processed by the patent office in Guindy. They have asked me about the method of preparation of these idlis,” Iniyavan said on Thursday.He further said, “I have prepared idlis in various shapes like square, triangle for which I have made moulds. I have also prepared idlis of various taste like apple, orange, tomato, pizza, pudina, curry, honey, tender coconut and chocolate by mixing them flavour or juice into batter. I felt I should get recognition for my hard work, so I decided to apply for patent.”A native of Coimbatore, he took up various jobs, including selling lottery tickets and working at a lathe workshop before working as an auto driver. “When I was driving the auto, I met on Chandramma and used to prepare idlis for hotels in Coimbatore,” he recalled.Later, Chandramma advised him to start his own business. “So I moved to Chennai in 1997 and after supplying idlis to a hotel for a sometime, I decided to take up marriage orders. I got good responses from customers.”“I have worked at houses of many VIPs, including former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, film producer Ramkumar and director P Vasu. For Union Minister M K Alagiri’s daughter’s marriage, I flew from Chennai to Madurai and prepared idlis. But, these VIPs does not even know me, as I worked on sub-contractrer.”
