KOCHI: Are you keen on learning about mangroves? Visit Kumbalangi. “Mangrove Walk”, a unique project to study about mangroves is being framed by the Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society (KMTDS). The project is aimed at promoting preservation of environment and facilitating students and researchers.“Kumbalangi already has a very good mangrove forest. The Society is planning to construct walkways through the forest. The project also aims at preserving existing forest and planting more species,” said Shaji, secretary of KMTDS.He also said that another component of the project is a library that will provide information on mangroves. Noting that a number of students and researchers have already visited Kumbalangi, he said it has been scientifically proved that seven out of 46 species of mangroves grow in Kumbalangi, which is spread in an area of seven square kilometres. “The Kumbalangi tourism village project not only aims at promoting tourism but also at preserving the ecosystem of the village,” Shaji said. He said that the plan was to construct walkway using wooden planks so that it would not be harmful for the mangroves. “Steps will also be taken to plant species that are not growing in Kumbalabgi as of now. The mangrove nursery, which is defunct now, will be revived. We also expect full support of panchayat in implementing the project,” he said. The society has submitted a proposal to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute to prepare a detailed project report for mangrove walk. “The funds for the project is expected to be allotted from Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas’s MP fund,” he said.
