THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Assembly will discuss the vexatious Mullaperiyar Dam issue at a special session on Friday. The three-hour session will begin at 9 a.m., Speaker G Karthikeyan said here on Thursday.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will present the issue under Rule 130 which pertains to discussing matters of grave public interest in the House. The Assembly is expected to pass a resolution following a debate. A number of issues other than the twin demands for a new dam and lowering of water levels at Mullaperiyar to 120 feet are also expected to come up on Friday. Thursday’s Assembly Subject Committee’s visit to the Mullaperiyar Dam, the increasingly strained relationship with Tamil Nadu and the violence reported from the state border, are among the issues that are expected to come up in the House.Although Oommen Chandy waved away the Advocate-General K P Dandapani episode as a "closed chapter" after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting, the controversy too will find reverberations on Friday, especially with the Assembly Subject Committee reportedly planning to summon him.The aggressive stance taken by K M Mani and P J Joseph, the findings of the Subject Committee which visited Mullaperiyar on Thursday and a renewed call for peaceful negotiations also are expected to be discussed at Friday’s session.
