KOCHI: The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) has asked the state government to put an end to the policy of issuing new licences to hotels above threestar status. This will only lead to increased liquor consumption in the state, the KCBC said.
The opening of more bars in the state on the grounds of tourism promotion is unacceptable. Toeing the line of those countries using sex, liquor and drugs to promote tourism is against our tradition and culture and it is like betraying the people of the state. While getting revenue from the liquor business, the government forgets that a large chunk of the profits from the industry goes to liquor barons.

As promised in its election manifesto the UDF Government should restore sections 232 and 447 of the Panchayat and Municipality Acts in the new liquor policy.
