J&K polls: Committee set up in Reasi to keep a check on 'paid news'
An official said that the measure was taken on the instructions of the Election Commission of India to help curb 'paid news'.

Jammu: To keep a check on "paid news" in the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Reasi district authorities on Wednesday constituted a media certification and monitoring committee.

"District election officer Shabir Ahmed Bhatt constituted the media certification and monitoring committee, besides establishing a media-monitoring cell to keep a watch on election-related news and features appearing in both print and electronic media ahead of the assembly elections," an official spokesman said.

He said that the measure was taken on the instructions of the Election Commission of India to help curb 'paid news'. "Additional Deputy Commissioner Shiv Kumar Gupta will head the committee, and assistant revenue commissioner Tilak Raj Sharma, NHPC chief engineer Rajeet Jerat, journalist Devinder Thakur and district information officer Parvinder Kour will be the other members," the spokesman said.

The committee will be responsible for certification of advertisements, monitoring of news in print and electronic media and keeping records of all election-related news of the candidates, he said.

The committee members will verify advertisement contents sought to be published by political parties, the candidates or their supporters before releasing them to the media, the spokesman said.
