Srinagar: Three terrorists were killed in an encounter in Handwara region of Northern Kashmir on Sunday. A joint operation was carried out by police, Army and paramilitary forces in the forests of Krumbhora.

Police said that the identity of the slain terrorists is yet to be ascertained but prima facie they appear to have belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba.

The encounter began on Saturday night after troops launched a search operation in Krumbhora forests of Handwara tehsil following information about the presence of the

militants, an army official said.

The encounter took place just hours after the National Security Advisor-level talks between India and Pakistan were called off.

On August 5, Pakistani terrorist Mohammad Naved alias Usman Khan, along with his accomplice Momin, attacked a Border Security Force convoy killing two personnel and injuring eight others in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur. While Momin was killed in the gunbattle, Usman fled into the forests after taking three hostages. He was soon surrounded by a team of BSF and Army soldiers and a brief gunbattle followed. He was overpowered by his hostages and captured.
