Observing that the implementation of Social Nurseries as a pilot project and adopting the method of direct sowing to reduce the duration of Samba crop had received overwhelming response from delta farmers, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced more measures for ensuring a higher yield during the Samba season and allocated Rs 17.10 crore towards implementing them. Already, the CM has allocated Rs 53.53 crore for increasing Samba yield.
The new measures include, doubling the grant for farmers to undertake agricultural activities (from Rs 240 to Rs 480 per acre), increasing the extent of lands under this scheme from one lakh acres to 2.5 lakh acres and providing 30 kgs of certified paddy seeds per acre to the farmers who take up direct sowing method with a subsidy of Rs 10 per kg. Besides, seed sowing machines would be provided at 50 per cent subsidy to the farmers.
The CM announced these measures after taking into consideration the views expressed by the farmers at the special awareness camps conducted by the State Agriculture Department.
