J~~amp;amp;K: Lawyers protest against human rights violations, work affected
Work in Jammu and Kashmir High Court and subordinate courts was affected on Wednesday as lawyers affiliated with Kashmir Bar Association stayed away from proceedings to protest against alleged human rights violations in the Valley.

Work in Jammu and Kashmir High Court and subordinate courts was affected on Wednesday as lawyers affiliated with Kashmir Bar Association stayed away from proceedings to protest against alleged human rights violations in the Valley.

The work in the courts across Kashmir was hit by the strike call given by the Association to protest against the alleged human rights violations.

The Association on Tuesday announced its decision to support the protest programme chalked out by Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani against the killing of five persons in Shopian district on September 7 and September 11.

Geelani had called for a march to the local office of United Nations Military Observors Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) at Sonawar in Srinagar on Wednesday and a shutdown on Saturday. It had also asked people to stage protests after Friday prayers.

"To put an end to human rights violations taking place, day in and day out, in the state and show solidarity with the people, the Bar Association has decided to support the call given by Geelani and requested all the lawyers to abstain from appearing before the High Court and its subordinate courts on September 18 and September 21 and stage protests against the human rights violations after Friday prayers," a spokesman of the Association had said.
