COIMBATORE: Blood is certainly not thicker than politics as a clash between an ageing father and son in the upcoming civic polls in Coimbatore’s suburban Annur Town Panchayat would show. The Annur Town Panchayat, where Coimbatore’s extended and hyped real estate market is fast expanding, has 15 wards with a little over 13,000 voters. However, the most curiously watched contest is in Ward No 14 where a partially hearing impaired 72-year old E M Angappan of the AIADMK is pitted against eight other candidates, including his 40-year old son A Chandrasekar. While the father has been a diehard MGR fan, the son is a staunch follower of ‘Black MGR’ Vijayakant. However, since the DMDK founded by Vijayakant, has allocated the ward to its ally CPM, Chandrasekar has decided to cross swords with his father as an Independent candidate.“My father is a hardcore MGR fan and has been with the AIADMK since it was formed in 1972. “Those who joined the party much after him were rewarded with good positions. But for him (Angappan) the party stands first and not his son,” says Chandrasekar without batting an eyelid about opposing his father in the elections.“Since the AIADMK has given him the ticket this time, he is simply following the command of his party. “I decided to enter the fray as an Independent because the local church chose to field me as a common candidate for the post of councillor,” claims Chandrasekar. The son says he is confident of winning the polls. “On the counting day, I will seek the blessings of my father,” he quips.Angappan, however, is keeping to himself without talking to the media. Who wins would depend on the mood of the 1,056 voters, including 538 women of Ward 14.
