BHUBANESWAR: For the State Government, flood is a number game. Reeling out numbers seems to be the way flood is managed by the State administration even as lakhs grapple without food and shelter.
On Tuesday, the State Government claimed that it has distributed 48,170 quintal rice and 10,943 quintal flattened rice (chuda) among the affected in 19 districts. Just a day before, the numbers were 15,950 quintal rice and 1,606 quintal 'chuda' which meant the Government supplied over 41,500 quintal of dry food to the affected population. While this necessitates huge logistics support, what is amazing is the way the Government managed to procure such huge stock of 'chuda', in particular.

On September 12, Kendrapara had not received a single gram of 'chuda' but Tuesday's emergent relief statistics showed that the district had been provided with 1,955 quintal.

"Such stock can be available only at Malgodown in Cuttack but given the situation in the district where over five lakh people are affected, the quantity cannot be made available in a day," averred a district official.

What was more intriguing was that the number of beneficiaries covered under emergent relief remained static over these two days. Puri received neither of the two on Monday.

What's your reaction?
