New Delhi: With the situation in West Asia deteriorating rapidly, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has postponed indefinitely his trip to India that was to begin on Wednesday.
The new date for the visit will be worked out later through diplomatic channels.
"The visit has been postponed because of the developments in the Middle-East. It is hoped that the minister would visit India in the near future,” an Embassy spokesman said in New Delhi.
External Affairs Ministry said Iran sought rescheduling of the visit for other mutually-convenient dates. Mottaki was to arrive here this morning for a three-day visit that was likely to be dominated by Iran's stand-off with the international community over its nuclear programme and the proposed gas pipeline project.
Situation in the West Asia is grave because of fighting between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah militia. Israel has been carrying out air strikes on Lebanon after Hezbollah abducted its two soldiers more than a week ago.
Hezbollah has responded with firing of missiles up to 40 km inside Israel and there are concerns that the militia could strike Tel Aviv, about 120 kms south of the border with Lebanon.
Iran is believed to have close ties with Hezbollah.
