New Delhi: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mehdi Safari will arrive in India on Tuesday on a day-long visit that will provide an opportunity to the two countries to strengthen their bilateral relations, which witnessed some hiccups in the recent past.

Safari will be in India as part of his tour of the

region. He is expected to meet Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan.

The two sides will review the bilateral ties and are expected to commit themselves to strengthen these in view of the historical links.

Issues like the proposed gas pipeline and Iran's nuclear stand-off with the international community are also expected to figure in the discussions.

The visit comes amidst assertions by India that the bilateral ties are in fact irrespective of New Delhi's vote against Iran's nuclear programme at the IAEA meetings.

New Delhi is keen to strengthen further these relations, Indian officials said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told Parliament last week that India and Iran enjoyed historical cultural ties and his Government was making efforts to strengthen these.

The proposed Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline and LNG projects have been facing difficulties in taking-off because of differences on pricing and some other aspects.
