The youth of Baviyan village gathered around and cleaned a 500-year-old well in Shedbal town in Kagawad Taluk, Karnataka. According to the villagers, this well, which is around 50 feet deep, once supplied water to the entire village. It was built by the old village heads, and is still an important part of the region. It is said that the members of the Gowda family use the well’s water specifically for Kanneri Puja. Not only that, politician Kallappanna Awade of Ichalkaranji town in Maharashtra, who originally hails from this village, has a tradition of fetching water for worship in his family. The youth of this place had come together to clean such a holy well.
Recently, a team of around 50 young people came together to clean the surroundings of the well and they voluntarily cleaned it. They lifted the mud that had accumulated in the well over many years.
Since the well building is in the shape of a pyramid, no machines were used. Everyone had to do their part. When the young people noticed this, they lifted the mud in the well and provided water for everyone.
Recently, nine-year-old resident of South Hlimen on the southern outskirts of Mizoram’s capital Aizawl received the first SEL Foundation Award for Clean and Green Earth for his tireless efforts in cleaning his village and a nearby amusement park.
The award was presented to Joseph Lalrinfela at an event organised by the Tripura Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change in Aizawl to coincide with Earth Day. This year’s theme was Planet vs Plastic.
SEL Foundation chairman and environmental activist Saizampuii Sailo, who presented the award to Lalrinfela, said the boy was recognised for his commitment to cleaning up garbage, especially plastic waste, left by visitors to Lalsavunga Park, one of the most popular spots for young couples and families.
