Hyderabad: Techie Dies After Slipping Into Open Underground Sump At Hostel; Incident Caught On Cam

A 25-year-old techie died after he accidentally fell into an open underground water sump inside a private hostel in Hyderabad’s Raidurg area.

The deceased, Shaik Akmal Sufuyan, was living at Shanmukh Men’s PG (paid guest) hostel in Gachibowli’s Anjaiah Nagar, Times of India reported citing Raidurgam police.

Sufuyan had stepped out to run some chores on Sunday morning. The incident took place when he returned to the hostel and opened the gate, failing to notice the open sump.

Soon after entering the premises, he slipped into the sump and died. The whole incident was caught on the hostel’s CCTV.

“While the hostel owner K Madhusudhan Reddy was standing only a few feet away with his child and wife, he failed to notice Shaik as he was facing the other side,” police official was quoted as saying.

Working at a private firm, the software employee — hailing from Khammam district — had moved into the hostel two months ago.

Reportedly, the owner rushed towards the sump after hearing a loud thud sound. Initially he failed to understand what had happened, however, he grew suspicious when he saw some bananas lying on the floor.

Madhusudhan immediately went to check the CCTV footage, only to realise that Sufuyan had fallen into it, said Raiduram sub-inspector V Srinivas.

By the time the 25-year-old was pulled out of the sump and taken to a hospital, he died.

A criminal case against the hostel has been registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 304 A (negligence causing death).
