In a first, a Bluetooth earbud led not just to an arrest, but even a conviction in West Bengal. On Saturday, the Barrackpore additional district and sessions court convicted five men in connection with a dacoity and murder in Titagarh in 2023.
The first arrest in the recent RG Kar Hospital rape and murder was also with the help of a Bluetooth earphone. Accused Sanjoy Roy had left his ear phone near the spot, which led the police to him.
THE CASE
On May 24, 2023, a dacoity with murder was reported at a jewellery shop under Titagarh PS, Barrackpore PC. From the spot, a bag which contained a Bluetooth wireless headphone and some papers of a motorcycle was recovered. Using these two leads, along with CCTV footages, CDR & IPDR analysis, and other technical evidence, the five were arrested from Barrackpore (Rahara), Birbhum (Murari), Patna (Bihta), Odisha (Baleshwar) and Punjab (Moga). The five were identified as Safi Khan, Md. Jamshed Ansari, Asif Khan, Rajvir Singh and Uttam Kumar Upadhyay.
Investigative officer Indrajit Das, currently posted at Sankrail PS, Howrah PC, submitted the charge sheet within 85 days. Special PP Bibhas Chatterjee, was engaged for prosecution which relied on strong technical evidences, gait pattern analysis, TIP, video enhancement techniques, other technical evidences and most importantly, matching the mac id of the Bluetooth headphone seized from the PO with that of a paired mobile phone recovered from a suspect.
Charges were framed in December 2023 and the trial started in January 2024.
Speaking to News18, Barrackpore Commissioner Aloke Rajhoria said, “I am happy that we could get conviction within 15 months of the incident with help of technical evidences, specifically Bluetooth pairing and could deliver justice. This is the first case in the country where Bluetooth pairing played important role in convincing court.”
