The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai has been experiencing enormous profits in the hospitality industry as room rates in luxurious branded hotels reached an all-time high for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding. The wedding took place on Friday, July 12 and the following festivities will take place at the Jio World Convention Center in BKC on July 13 and 14. Many premium hotels have already been sold out at prices as high as Rs 1.4 lakh per night for the wedding festivities.
The wedding of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Ambani with Radhika Merchant has hosted many prominent personalities from across the globe, which caused room rates to skyrocket. According to ‘The Hindu’, the wedding event has resulted in soaring prices, with presidential suites costing up to Rs 5 lakh per night. Rates at many luxury hotels have risen by 25–30 percent.
The wedding celebrations took place on July 12, with additional events on July 13 and a reception on July 14. On travel booking websites, the Sofitel Mumbai was charging approximately ₹1,04,500 for a night’s stay on July 14, despite having no rooms available on July 12. Sofitel’s highest room price range is ₹ 37,900, excluding taxes and charges on normal days.
The website of the Trident showed reservations for July 13 and July 14 sold out, and the new bookings were available after the wedding weekend on July 15. Only one or two rooms in each of the three options — ‘Run of the House,’ ‘Suites’ and ‘Towers’ — were currently available in ITC Maratha, according to the hotel’s official website.
Mumbai hotels often sell out and charge up to 30 per cent – 50 per cent during the peak wedding season between October and December, especially for high-profile weddings. According to the hospitality officer, most hotels are fully booked during these kinds of events. “Hotel rooms are either sold out or are available at a 30 per cent to 50 per cent premium. Flights and taxis also charge a premium during such events,” he said.
This is not the first time in the country when hotel booking price have skyrocketed.
When India hosted the 2023 ODI World Cup, Six Senses Fort Barwara, Udaipur, charged Rs 7 lakh per night. Rajat Gera, the Director of Commercials said, “There is an influx of inbound tourism, which had been pretty stagnant and inconsistent so far. Domestic travellers book late and the influx of international tourists has led to rates going up substantially. Those who hadn’t planned in advance were willing to pay a premium of Rs 7 lakh for Maharaja suite.”
Similarly, there was an extraordinary increase in hotel reservations, with an 80 per cent rise in Ayodhya on the occasion of the consecration of the Ram Mandir on January 22. The price of a single room at the Cygnett Collection Hotel was Rs 70,240 on January 22, which was four times more than it was previously.
