HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority has blamed the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for demolition of portions of Devdi Mehdi Nawaz Jung, a Grade-I notified heritage building.“It is the responsibility of the GHMC to maintain and protect heritage structures as per government orders,'' said HMDA officials and urged GHMC authorities to take stringent action, including criminal proceedings, against the culprits. They said the heritage building was the first house in Banjara Hills built by Nawab Mehdi Nawaz Jung. He built it without disturbing the rocky landscape in the then hilly forest area. The building was the only house in Banjara Hills for a long time. The officials said that a few months ago the owners of the building had approached the government seeking the building's removal from the list of heritage structures. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) forwarded  the letter to the HMDA.  Based on the request from MAUD, the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC) planned to inspect the building this month and submit a detailed report to the government. But, before the inspection could take place, the owner demolished  portions of the building, they said.HMDA will ask the GHMC not to give permission for development as was done in the case of other heritage buildings like Malwala Palace which were pulled down surreptitiously.
