Shimla: One person has been killed while nine others are feared dead after being washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains at a village in Paonta Sahib area of Sirmaur District.
Four vehicles, carrying members of a marriage party, were trapped in the flash flood due to heavy rains at Haripur Khol village in Paonta Sahib, officials said on Saturday.
The vehicles got trapped inside a khud (pit), created by heavy rains in the region. The body of one of the victims was recovered while nine are still missing.
The victims were from different places, including some from adjoining Haryana, and had gathered at Nalkha village.
Services of divers have been requisitioned to fish out the bodies.
Chief Minister PK Dhumal expressed grief over the incident and directed the district administration to rush to the spot with rescue teams and retrieve the bodies from the rubble.
He also directed officials to provide relief to the families of the victims of the flash floods.
Deputy Commissioner PS Chauhan and Superintendent of Police were camping at the spot along with medical and rescue teams to monitor relief and rehabilitation work.
The water level in almost all the rivers and their tributaries in the state has increased.
