THANJAVUR: It was a hat-trick victory of sorts for the AIADMK, whose candidates for the posts of chairperson and chairman, came out on top during the local body polls in the districts of Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Pattukkottai. This is the first time that the party has registered simultaneous victories in all three areas.This is significant as the DMDK — an ally of the AIADMK during the Assembly polls in May 2011— contested alone in the local body polls.The AIADMK’s K Savithiri Gopal won the Thanjavur municipal chairperson post in the civic polls held on October 17. She beat her nearest rival B Kanagavalli of the DMK, by a significant margin of 12,204 votes. Savithiri secured 48,600 votes, while Kanagavalli secured 36,396 votes. Meanwhile, the DMDK’s Sahaya Mary Adaikalam, MDMK’s Sumathy Veeramani, INC candidate Lara Mahendran and PMK candidate R Vanitha lost their deposits.Similarly, S Ratna, the AIADMK candidate for Kumbakonam municipality, was elected as chairperson. Ratna secured 31,748 votes, as opposed to the 21,252 votes won by rival DMK party’s N Bhuvaneswari. The other contestants for the post, including Alphonce Mary M (VCK), S Gomathy (DMDK), Sudha (PMK) and Vasantha (INC), lost their deposits.The AIADMK also conquered the Pattukottai municipality after its candidate R Jawahar Babu, was elected to the chairman post.Babu got 19,390 votes. His rival and DMK candidate Annadurai Seeni secured 14,161 votes. CPI(M) candidate S Kandhaswamy lost his deposit.
