CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the State government to grant permission/no objection certificate (NOC) to Vanniyar Educational Trust in Konerikuppam to establish a new law college in the name of Saraswathi Law College in Tindivanam. The NOC must be given to the trust within a week to enable it to approach the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University in Chennai and the Bar Council of India in Delhi for necessary approval/recognition, Justice V Dhanapalan has said. The judge was allowing a writ petition from the Trust, represented by its president G K Mani, challenging an order dated December 30 last year of the Law Secretary refusing NOC.Following an interim order passed earlier, the trust had engaged qualified persons as per the norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the judge noted. The stand of the government that there need not be any more law college in Tindivanam as two other law colleges had been functioning in Chengalpattu and Vellore, was disappointing, the judge said.Establishment of more law colleges in the State was very much required for catering to the needs of the students, for which the government had to take efforts either by itself or through some other agencies. It should at least encourage and permit the private agencies to open law colleges, the judge observed.
