New Delhi: The Indo-US nuclear deal has cleared a major hurdle. The Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs and the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the text on Wednesday morning.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presided over the meeting on the nuclear draft bill attended by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A K Antony and the Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
The leaders assessed the civil nuclear deal before deciding on the next course of action.
The meeting also looked into the nature of tough negotiations that led to US accepting New Delhi's prime concern of reprocessing spent fuel. The Left parties will be briefed by the Prime Minister on Wednesday evening.
National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, who led the Indian delegation to Washington that included Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon, achieved the breakthrough after protracted negotiations to overcome differences over these issues.
The US reservation on giving India the right to reprocess spent fuel was addressed after New Delhi offered to set up a dedicated national facility under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards.
