New Delhi: Google, alongside the Nexus 6 smartphone and Nexus 9 tablet, also announced the launch of a streaming media player for music, movies and videos, which can also allow users to play games via the Android TV device. Built in partnership with Asus, it is said to be a first-of-its-kind Android gaming device.
Named the Nexus Player, the new media player will deliver video apps to a television screen for consumers looking to supplement or go without cable or satellite. Some of the apps included on the player are Netflix, Hulu Plus, the Food Network, Pandora and The Huffington Post.
The new device will compete against similar streaming devices made by Apple and Roku, among others.
Nexus Player, which is the first device running Android TV, comes with a voice-activated remote for playing casual games and finding your favourite shows.
Gamepad for Nexus Player (sold separately) is engineered for control of your favourite Android games.
Pre-orders for the streaming player will start beginning Friday. The device will hit the store shelves on November 3. The Nexus Player, reportedly, will come for $99 and the game controller for $39.
Android 5.0 Lollipop, which comes on Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player, will also be available on Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10 and Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks.
