BANGALORE: The villagers of Channammanapalya in Magadi have been going through sleepless nights. Scary sounds by a ‘ghost’ had frightened the villagers and some of them had even fallen ill after they saw the face of the ‘ghost’.Finally, the villagers heaved a sigh of relief after the police seized a scary mask and black gloves with sharp nails, from the ‘ghost’, who turned out to be a 17-year-old Palanethra, a first year PU student at Government Junior College and the son of a Gram Panchayat member.It all started when a biker died in a road mishap at Hanumapura, a neighbouring village, recently. Co-incidentally, Palanethra brought home the scary mask and gloves from one of his friends, who had bought it from Majestic to use them in a play held at college. Palanethra started roaming the streets of village wearing them during nights. Some of the villagers who saw it related it with the motorist’s death and feared that his ghost was haunting the villagers.But, when Palanethra scared Rajanna (35), an agriculturist, who was going on a two-wheeler, on Friday night, the latter was left shocked and started screaming. Palanethra, who knew Rajanna, figured that the situation was going out of control and took off his mask and tried to convince Rajanna that it was not a ghost’s act. But, Rajanna, who was in shock was not in a position to listen to him.The next day, he informed Palanethra’s father about the incident. Palanethra’s father who understood the seriousness of his son’s prank took him to task.However, by then the villagers had informed Magadi police about the incident. The police brought Palanethra to the station and seized his scary mask and woollen gloves. The police said that Palanethra was sent off after a stern warning. But no case is registered in connection with the incident.
