With Ganesh festival less than a fortnight away (Sept 19), several petitioners, including a former IAS officer, wanted the AP High Court to issue directions to the concerned authorities for minimising pollution of water bodies during idol immersion.
Dealing with a batch of writ petitions seeking steps to prohibit immersion of idols made with plaster of paris and those painted with chemicals, the High Court asked the petitioners to talk to their local Ganesh utsav committees and make suggestions to the court for issuing necessary directions on the issue.
It, however, directed the state government to file a comprehensive report on the steps being taken by it to protect the water bodies in the state.
It adjourned the matter for further hearing to Sept 10.
Recently one retired IAS officer and member of Intach B Venkata Papa Rao had filed a public interest petition seeking immediate ban on immersion of idols made with plaster of Paris and those painted with chemicals, to prevent water bodies such as lakes, reservoirs, ponds, canals and rivers from becoming polluted.
He requested the court to direct district collectors and police superintendents of all districts to implement guidelines prescribed in ‘The Guidelines for Idol Immersion, 2010’ issued by the Central pollution control board of the Union ministry of environment and forest.
He also wanted the constitution of an action committee to oversee immersion and encourage use of eco-friendly materials like clay and natural colours in the making of idols.
He wanted steps adhering in tune with a court order passed in the T Ramakrishna Rao vs.
Principal secretary and others case in the year 2001.
