CHANGANASSERY: P K Narayana Panicker led the Nair Service Society (NSS) meticulously for three decades and that helped him win the confidence of the community and become a people’s leader. A leading lawyer, Panicker entered into community activities by accident, NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair stated in the February issue of “Service” journal, brought out by the NSS.A true follower of Mannath Padmanabhan, he started his career as a teacher and lawyer and finally quit both professions to work for strengthening the NSS. Panicker began his stint with the NSS as its treasurer and later became the general secretary in a tight contest and remained in the post for 28 years. Narayana Panicker would have continued as general secretary for many more years, but his health condition forced him to take the lighter burden of the president, Sukumaran Nair said. His rise in the organisation from the post of a treasurer to the powerful position of general secretary makes him different from others. After NSS founder Mannath Padmanabhan, it was Narayana Panicker who gained the love of the community members by serving them tirelessly. He worked hard to take the organisation to great heights. During his term as the treasurer of the NSS, he became Changanassery municipal chairman and held the post for about one-and-a-half years. The period was marked by clean rule, Nair said. His concept of ruling the municipality with the help of a coalition system made him very popular. Narayana Panicker also worked towards cementing ties between different communities.
