Barmer: A loud explosion followed by pieces of metal falling from an IAF jet caused panic in a village in Barmer district of Rajasthan.
Villagers from Gugdi initially complained that a "few bombs " had accidentally fallen from an IAF jet during the Republic Day exercise and caused damages to a few houses.
The explosion was heard as far as 10 km away, but there were no casualties and the damages to the houses were minor. Teams from the IAF and Barmer police rushed to the spot.
Later IAF sources clarified that the metal pieces were spent shells from a Sukhoi 30 which brought down a suspicious looking balloon-like object in the no-fly zone.
An investigation is on but defence sources said the suspicious-looking object is likely to be a meteorological balloon from across the border.
