PUDUCHERRY: Senior DMK leader and former minister K Ponmudy was on Wednesday arrested on alleged land grab charges and sent to Cuddalore Central Prison after he was picked up from his residence at Shanmughapuram Colony, Villupuram. Considered as DMK’s strongman in Villupuram and a staunch loyalist of party chief M Karunanidhi’s son and former deputy CM M K Stalin, Ponmudy was arrested on charges of forcibly transferring land belonging to Villupuram State Transport Corporation Employees Housing Society to Siga Education Trust, run by his family members and others.Ponmudy has been remanded to 15 days of judicial custody by Fast Track Court-II Judge Santosh. The police also arrested Shanti (39), Secretary of Villupuram State Transport Corporation Employees Housing Society, while cases have been registered against Saraswathi, Ponmudy’s mother-in-law, trustees of Siga Education Trust and Mannivanan, President of the Trust.According to police, around 61,600 sqft of land allotted for a children’s park and community hall of Villupuram State Transport Corporation Employees Housing Society was allegedly tendered without authorisation to Siga Educational Trust in 1997.
