New Delhi: The Railway Ministry is mulling imposing of a restriction on visitors' entry to railway stations as a security measure in the wake of the last week's serial blasts in Mumbai's suburban trains.
"We are thinking of banning visitors on platforms and inside trains," Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav said at a department's function on Thursday night.
Lalu in his rustic style told a gathering at the Rajendra Nagar Terminal that those who wanted to see off their relatives or friends would have to do it from outside the railway stations. "They will be allowed only up to platform gates, like in airports," he said.
He said it was very easy for anti-social elements and criminals to enter into platforms by simply buying Rs 3 platform tickets.
"Passengers' safety and security is our topmost concern, so we cannot compromise or take any chances," Lalu said.
He announced that the Railway Protection Force (RTF) would be strengthened and given more power to act against troublemakers.
"We are planning to monitor the safety measures through the railway control room for which the RPF would be equipped with modern technology," he added.
The Railway Ministry had recently announced that it would install close circuit cameras and metal detectors besides deploying sniffer dogs at important railway stations across the country.
