PARADIP: As part of measures to galvanise coastal security, Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra visited Paradip on Wednesday. At a review meeting with officials of Paradip Port Trust and local Naval officials, he proposed to set up Naval advancement centre to monitor the security of the industrial base here.Besides setting up a new forward base at Paradip, Navy has decided to set up Naval advancement centre here for which PPT had been handed over nearly 25 acres of land in the port area to expedite work. Chopra visited the site, close to the oil refinery project of IOCL and Paradip Phosphates Ltd, and interacted with Naval officials of INS Chilika to expedite the work. The advancement centre would act as control room and monitor the coastal security, he added. He also held a review meeting to tighten security along the coast. PPT Secretary Nabkishore Mishra, Deputy Conservator Gauriprasad Biswal and other ports, Naval and CISF officials participated in the meeting.Describing the East coast as equally vulnerable, the Vice-Admiral said though intrusions often take place by Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan fishermen for fishing, strict vigil must be maintained against possible entry by other elements. As a wide gap exists on the East coast in the absence of any Naval facility between Visakhapatnam and Haldia, the Centre had approved creation of a new forward Naval base at Paradip two years back for smooth movement of vessels and providing logistical support. The proposed Naval base will have facilities to refuel and service vessels as well as stock ammunition, sources said.
