New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Thursday sought explanations from the central and Delhi governments as well as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on their failure to deal with the outbreak of dengue in the Capital.
Advocate Rajeev Awasthi submitted before a division bench comprising judges Vijender Jain and Kailash Gambhir that the two governments and the civic body were caught unawares when the outbreak was reported in the city.
He accused the two, governments and the MCD of not complying with the guidelines issued by the court in 1998 on a suo motu note of the large number of deaths due to the disease in 1996.
The court in that order directed the two governments, the MCD and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to comply with the guidelines to deal with such a situation in future, Awasthi said.
The court had said that 10 major hospitals in the Capital must be fully equipped with the necessary equipment and facilities to deal with day-to-day dengue patients in case of an outbreak.
It had also directed the Delhi government to prepare a dengue control programme with regular budgetary provisions for taking effective measures to prevent an outbreak of the disease.
