Ryots in the Cauvery delta region are now gearing up to initiate legal action against the clearance given to Great Eastern Energy Corporation Ltd (GEECL) for methane exploration near Mannargudi, claiming that the Centre has shown scant regard for the “overwhelming opposition” to the project by local farmers.
On Thursday, GEECL in a press conference here, indicated that it is likely to begin natural gas exploration in Mannargudi by year-end. The officials of the company claimed that the requisite Environment Clearance (EC) and petroleum exploration licence had been obtained and only minor procedural clearances from the State government were due.
However, the announcement has not gone down well with farmers of the area, who told Express that they were now weighing legal options to challenge the clearance.
G Sundaramurthy of TN Vivasayigal Sangam, said ryots Tiruvarur expressed their clear opposition to the project unanimously in the public hearing.
