New Delhi: Thousands of illegal placement agencies flourish in cities like Delhi where there is a high demand for house help and maids. A woman, Mamuni, sent her daughter to Delhi two years ago with the dreams of a good job and good life.
But as there was now news of her so Mamuni came to Delhi to look for her. She has been in Delhi for one month, but is yet to find her. She is not willing to go back home without her daughter. She says a placement agency promised the family that her daughter will earn good money and brought her to Delhi.
Similarly hundreds of Assamese family working in the tea gardens are also searching for their daughters who was brought to Delhi for job.
Delhi Police raided one illegal placement agency in Shakarpur area of Delhi with the help of NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan.
Several girls between the age of 7-8 years were rescued from a room during the raid. They were forced to live with a male agent in the small room. During the raid Mamuni recognised the man as Dolon who had promised to provide good job to her daughter.
When police asked about Mamuni's daughter, Dolon said that the girl has been working in a house in Delhi. Dolon also revealed that many Assamese men are involved in the business of trafficking girls. He took the police and Mamuni to the house where her daughter was working. It was a tearful reunion.
The employer admitted that they never gave any money to the maid. Every month the placement agency took Rs 2,800 as her salary, they said. They had also paid Rs 30,000 as one-time fee to get a maid.
Dolon also told the police that he brought 34 girls and got Rs 7-8,000 for each one of them.
