CUDDALORE: Confederation of Farmers’ Associations urged the State government to recommend that the Central government declare the district a disaster zone.S Thanikachalam, secretary of Tamil Nadu Herbal and Tree Growers Association, said, “We are demanding Coconut Board, National Horticulture Board and Cashew Export Promotion Council to come forward to provide financial assistance to remove uprooted trees and also for rehabilitation. The State government should also seek help from these bodies.”Citing the declaration of Puducherry as a calamity-affected area, farmers asked: “Then why not declare Cuddalore district a disaster zone as it is being continuously hit by floods and cyclones?”Farmers said that in a pre-budget meeting held in New Delhi on Wednesday, the general secretary of the Consortium of Indian Farmers Association, Chengal Reddy, submitted petitions to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Minister of State S S Palanimanickam demanding the Centre’s immediate attention.
