CPI-M fails to dampen Indo-Us spirits
Amidst demonstrations by CPI-M protesters, Indo-US military exercise begins on Monday. CPI-M says exercise is against independent foreign policy.

New Delhi: An Indo-US joint military exercise called the 'Exercise Cope India 2005' will be held in Kalaikunda on Monday.

To mark their disapproval against the joint exercise in which nearly 250 American military officers will participate, CPI-M led ruling Left front have organised demonstrations at all district headquarters.

In Kolkata, they would demonstrate in front of the American Center in a rally led by the CPI-M's state secretary, Anil Biswas.

Protesters from across West Bengal plan to assemble in front of the main entrance to the Kalaikunda air base, the venue for the war games.

"We feel this agreement is against the independent foreign policy which the Government of India has announced in the Common Minimum Programme," CPI-M MP Amitava Nandi said.

Explaining his party's resistance to the exercise, Nandi says that the Indo-US agreement on military co-operation would compromise the country's sovereignty.

Earlier, nearly 500 CPI-M supporters had staged a protest against the military exercise as two American multi-utility FC10 aircrafts arrived at the Kalaikunda air base in Kolkata on Friday.
