CHENNAI: A corporation lorry allegedly driven by a drunk driver knocked down two elderly women on Old Mahabalipuram Road on Monday. An eyewitness claimed that one of them fell unconscious, while the other sustained injuries on the head and was taken to a private hospital. The driver took to his heels after the incident.Rohit C S (19), a third year IT student at an institute in Karapakkam,told Express that when he was returning to his house in T Nagar, he saw a corporation lorry in front of him suddenly swerve to the right and hit an MTC bus 19B at Kandanchavadi. “The driver then swerved to the left, an almost right angle turn, and hit two elderly women waiting at the bus stop,” Rohit said.One of the women fell on some telephone lines and fell unconscious, while another was injured on the head. A police patrol party rushed the injured woman to a nearby private hospital, the youth said.Guindy traffic police, who are investigating the case, identified the injured woman as Sathyakumari (65) of Dr Natesan Road, Triplicane. A police officer said the victim was improving and that a case had been registered on basis of her complaint. “We do not know the other woman’s identity,” he added.While the driver of the corporation lorry escaped from the scene, the police seized the vehicle.
