KOCHI: As the city reels under mosquito menace, the Kochi Corporation has finally decided to act up. Beginning Friday, 50 workers from all Corporation circles will be armed with fogging machines to kill mosquitoes. The decision to conduct such a drive was made due to the increasing number of patients suffering from mosquito-borne diseases.“After rains, the climate and the innumerable puddles are a perfect combination to increase mosquito breeding. There have been too many cases of mosquito-borne diseases. That is why the Corporation has decided to do something about it,” said T K Ashraf, chairperson, Health Standing Committee, Kochi Corporation. “The Corporation has brought 25 fogging machines for the purpose. Two workers from each circle have been given training in handling the fogging machines,” he added. The workers will be provided with uniforms and protective gear like masks and caps. “The Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI)- Kochi, have sponsored the protective gear and uniforms for the workers. Previously, the workers faced difficulty in carrying the machines from place to place as the fogging machines are very heavy. This problem has been addressed this time, as the workers will be provided with bicycles sponsored by the Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry,” said Ashraf. The duty has been divided in such a way that each circle will have two workers and one machine, said Ashraf. Depending upon the requirement, more machines will be purchased in the coming days. The insecticide required for the purpose has also been purchased. The official inauguration of the drive will be conducted in the Corporation premises at 5.30 pm on Friday.
