Students march in Osmania University with body of dead colleague.

Hyderabad: Violence broke out in the Osmania University campus in Hyderabad on Wednesday as police opened fire in the air and caned the students carrying the body of their colleague who committed suicide over the demand for statehood to Telangana.

The clashes erupted when police and paramilitary forces tried to stop the students from marching towards the city centre. Several students were injured and the condition of one of them is critical, eyewitnesses said.

The police stopped the procession near the Ladies Hostel in the campus. The students wanted to take the body to Martyrs' Memorial near the state assembly building. The police later shifted the body out of the campus.

Venugopal Reddy, a final year MCA student, had set himself on fire early Tuesday. His burnt body was found in the university campus. In his suicide note, Reddy said he was afraid that Telangana state would not become a reality.

The students' Joint Action Committee (JAC) kept his body in the campus through Tuesday night and had planned to take it to his native Nalgonda district in a procession.
