Cops donkey drive derails DMDK agitation

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) activists staged a protest here on Wednesday after a donkey they had hired for a symbolic demonstration was taken away by the police.

DMDK activists had intitially planned to submit a memorandum to the bovine on the alleged failure of the police to maintain law and order. Explaining the logic, DMDK state unit secretary Selvam Selvaraj said there was no point in presenting any memorandum to the authorities as they never acted on it. “So we thought of registering our protest by presenting it to a donkey,” he said.

The donkey was stationed at the Indira Gandhi square near the protest venue in a mini-carrier when the police, smelling a rat, took away the donkey and the carrier’s driver to a place near Mudaliarpet.

Finding the hero of their protest missing, DMDK activists started raising slogans against the police and proceeded to stage a road block at the Indira Gandhi square, one of the busiest junctions.

Police then detained 37 of the DMDK activists and confined them in a fire service godown, said Selvaraj. They were later released but the activists refused to disperse unless the donkey was restored to the owner in Ariyankuppam from whom they had hiredit for Rs 2,500. They also demanded the release of the carrier’s driver.

Left with no options, the police returned the donkey to its owner following which the activists also dispersed.
