Cong downplays Gurgaon land acquisition row
BJP alleged rules were bent to acquire land in Gurgaon's Ullawas village by the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust.

New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday downplayed the political controversy surrounding the land allotment to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in Haryana in wake of the Punjab and Haryana High Court court summoning all records related to it.

"This matter is between the Haryana government and the High Court. The state government should accept whatever decision the court takes. This issue (of land acquisition) does not concern one trust but thousands of such trusts."

"Such things have happened not only in Bhatta Parsaul (in Uttar Pradesh) but in many parts of the country and hence the UPA government is bringing a very comprehensive bill on land acquistion which, once passed, will solve many of such problems," party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told.

In an apparent attack on the first family of the Congress, BJP on Tuesday alleged rules were bent to acquire 1,400 acres in Gurgaon's Ullawas village by the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and asked the ruling party if its stand was the same on farmers' land everywhere.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, her son and party general secretary Rahul and daughter Priyanka Vadhra are trustees of this body. The landowners who have filed the case in court include leading artist Anjolie Ela Menon.

Haryana government on Tuesday told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it has approved constitution of a high-powered committee to consider cases of petitioners in connection with acquisition of land for development of Sectors 58-63 in Gurgaon, which includes the particular trust as well.
