BARIPADA: The death of seven persons in 10 days due to alleged consumption of spurious liquor in Kaptipada area of Mayurbhanj has taken a new turn with the Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) backtracking on his earlier comments.
On Tuesday, ADMO (Public Health) Ramdas Brahma had said of the seven deaths, five were suspected to be due to consumption of spurious liquor. "Apart from two cases, there are 90 per cent chances that the rest five have died due to intake of spurious liquor," he had told the mediapersons.

While the excise officials had denied that the deaths were due to spurious liquor, the statement of the ADMO (PH) had put them in trouble. Excise Minister A U Singhdeo too had rubbished the media reports claiming the deaths were due to diseases.

While Brahma could not be contacted for comment, CDMO Chandan Murmu said he might have made the comment under pressure.

The deaths were reported from Salachua and Majhigadia panchayats in Mayurbhanj district between June 14 and 24.
