Chief Minister Oommen Chanady has instructed the officials concerned to urgently complete the remaining road work along the Mannuthi-Edappally stretch of the national highway. The instructions were issued at a meeting convened by the Chief Minister in the presence of Public Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju on Wednesday.
Instructions were issued to complete - the remaining work as per the schedule of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), additional amount of work suggested by the Cabinet and the work to be done as per the supplementary agreement - on a war footing.
Earlier, the Chief Minister had directed the officials to carry out some more work, which was not part of the contract. Orders were issued from the Works Department based on these instructions. NHAI Palakkad region project director informed the meeting that work estimate of 27.2 km service road has been submitted before the NHAI for its approval. Once the approval is given, work will start immediately. Otherwise the service roads will be constructed using state government funds, he said.
The project director further informed that signal lights have been set up and operated at Nadathara, Marathakkara, Amballoor, Puthukkad, Potta Ashram, Chalakkudy Municipal Junction and Karayamparamb Junction. The NHAI has given the nod to construct underpasses at Puthukkad and Chalakkudy junctions. The design and estimate of these projects are currently under the final stages of verification. Once the verification is over, its construction will begin by January 2013 and will be completed by June 2013.
The construction of footpaths on the newly constructed seven bridges have been completed. Street lights at the median have already been operational, but lights along the service roads are yet to be made operational, he said.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the Chief Minister issued strict instructions to make all street lights operational before November 15.
The government decision taken in February to establish 20 skywalks have not been implemented till now. The estimate for the same will be submitted before the state government before October 15, the project director assured the meeting. In the first phase, five skywalks will be constructed. A decision regarding the remaining can be taken based on the functioning of these skywalks, the Chief Minister said.
It has been pointed out that the construction of 1.560 km service road as per the contract has not been carried out so far, due to lack of land availability. The Chief Minister directed the Thrissur District Collector to urgently acquire land for the same before November 30. The Chief Minister further asked the officials to carry out follow-up action, including floating the tenders, for the remaining work within a month
