The Citizens’ Run Trust organised the 14th edition of the Citizens’ Run at the Marina Beach on Sunday.  Over thousand people from various NGOs took part in the run.

The Citizens’ Run Trust was launched to extend financial support to lesser known NGOs who support the welfare of destitutes, economically-weaker sections, mentally-challenged children and senior citizens.

Minnie Menon, Trustee, Citizens’ Run Trust, says, “We started with the objective of identifying some of the lesser-known NGOs. We first get a brief profile about them, get to know how they function and raise funds to support the causes which these NGOs stand for.”

Minnie also stated that over the years, the Run had helped benefit over 50 NGOs and funds worth `1 crore had been raised to support these NGOs.

The Run has also managed to garner the support of corporates, Minnie beamed with pride.

Right from its first edition, the Run has been organised on the first Sunday of the month of August.

“We have come forward to support the cause of Citizens’ Run this year as it gives us an opportunity to support an endeavor such as this. The trustees work selflessly in organising this run each year,” said Hanif Sattar, Director, Hasbro Clothing Pvt Ltd.

Corporates who participated in the Run this year, also felt that at this point, the event required brainstorming to take it to the next level. “The feel that the event gives is tremendous. We should now brainstorm to take the Run to the next level in years to come,” said Haneef.

This year’s beneficiaries were two NGOs - Sarva Vidya and The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI), Chennai Chapter. The trustees made sure to clarify that all beneficiaries were duly checked and verified. “On our part, we do our homework in verifying the NGOs that need support. This also helps us understand the areas of support required by these NGOs such as education, sanitation and infrastructure, among others, ” explained Minnie.

Ann Gonsalvez from the MSSI said that the support rendered by the Citizens’ Run Trust would go a long way in training nurses to handle multiple sclerosis detected  in patients.
