Chetan Bhagat’s fifth book ‘Revolution 2020-Love.corruption.ambition’ which released a month or two ago is definitely not as exciting as his previous books. But since I had my sem break for a whole month I thought of indulging in some reading and the first author that came to my mind was Chetan Bhagat. And obviously if it’s his book it has to be in some way related to IIT. His book narrates a story set in Varanasi about three childhood friends-Gopal, Aarti and Raghav. The story’s depiction of Varanasi and glimpses of different coaching centres at Kota and use of agricultural land for building institutes is pretty well portrayed. Each character has a different lifestyle in the story and their aim or ambition in life is also quite unique. Gopal, born in a poor middle class family, has worked hard to be at IIT. But he struggles with his studies and ends up nowhere. Yet, to survive he becomes the director of an Engineering college named ‘GangaTech’ with the help of a corrupt MLA, Shukla-ji. Aarti, his childhood sweetheart is a pretty, fun-loving girl whom any guy would love to be with. Then comes Raghav who is an IIT rank holder but later becomes a journalist wanting to end the corrupt practices prevailing in the education sector. This story is actually more of a love-triangle rather than a revolution as its title suggests. There is no villain in the story as such. Even though Gopal is in cahoots with corrupt goons,he is basically quite innocent and thus we sympathise with him too. This in some ways confuses the reader about whom he/she is expected to support in the story. The climax definitely is unexpected but that’s all it has.It does not hook the reader till the end, but if you are only looking at passing some time, it’s not a bad read.It appears as if the story is a script written for a potential movie. Not just that, while reading it one felt it had some striking similarities with a recently released Bollywood film. I could not relate to it much, but for Bhagat fans and their love for his simple use of language , this one might also be on their must-read list.
