CHENNAI: Anna Hazare’s call for an indefinite fast to ensure the passage of a strong Lokpal Bill was met with enthusiasm here on Tuesday. Fifty-one people started their indefinite fast and 250 went on relay fasting at a construction site on LB Road in Thiruvanmiyur, and they said they intend to continue fasting. The fast was kicked off by 85-year-old freedom struggle veteran and retired IAS official Lakshmikanthan Bharati. Venkata Kalyanam, who served as personal secretary to MK Gandhi, also addressed the gathering.Initially with about 400 people, the venue for the fast saw a rise in numbers by afternoon, as college students joined in the protest in substantial numbers. After Hazare’s arrest, about 70 protestors here courted arrest by taking to the streets, similar to thousands in other cities.Volunteers of India Against Corruption received the support of many organisations and unions. At the time of writing this report, the activists were steadfast that they would continue their fast-unto-death until the issue reaches its logical end.
