Chennai: A complaint has been lodged with the TN State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to protect the interest of school-going children, who are at the mercy of the crew members of the various government transport corporations. In his complaint before the Commission, R Randeep of Seven Wells submitted that all the children studying in government and government-aided schools were provided with bus passes to use the public transport. However, during peak hours the buses were always crowded.

The bus conductors and drivers do their best to avoid the school children, he said. Most of the buses either do not stop at the bus stops or stop some distance away. The children with heavy load of books on their back find it very difficult to board the buses and are forced to hang from the footboards up to their destination. The bus drivers and conductors are rude to the children and do not allow them to board the buses as it would affect their collection, he contended. The authorities concerned are silent spectators, the complainant contended and prayed for a direction to them to take necessary action against the frightening human rights violation against children.

SHRC acting chairman K Baskaran took cognizance of the complaint and directed the Transport Secretary and all the managing directors of the State Transport Corporations in Tamil Nadu to enquire into the matter and send a detailed report within eight weeks.
