Chennai: M Anto Peter, who can be credited with giving the Tamil script a virtual avatar, passed away on Thursday. The veteran writer credited with bringing out the first ever Tamil font died of a heart attack, aged 45. Peter has published a number of books on the use of Tamil in computers, as well as its use in multimedia. An MBA graduate, he established a mulitimedia institute, Softview, that introduced multimedia and animation courses as early as 1990.
Peter suffered a heart attack around 2.30 am on Thursday. He was rushed to a private hospital in Anna Nagar, where he breathed his last at 3.30 am. He is survived by his wife A Stella, son A Amuthan (16) and daughter A Amuthini (10).
Peter was born in Arumuganeri in Tirucendur District. He set up and ran more than 66 Computer training centers, joining hands with CSC Computers. Peter bagged several Government Awards for his books on Information Technology, such as Tamizhum Kaniporium (Tamil and the Computer), which won the Best Book award in 2004. He also won the Best Author Award in 2007, at the Neyveli Book Fair, from the Central Government and the Bharathi Literarian Award in 2010 by Shriram Group.
“He created Tamil fonts that are being used by various Tamil media institutions. He made many multimedia products, which included multimedia versions of the Thirukkural and Athichudi,” said Ko Vi Lenin, a friend of Peter’s. Anto Peter’s last rites will be held at 3 pm on Friday at Kolathur Lakshmipuram.
