Chavan plays Marathi card, says Marathis first in recruitment
The attack on Friday has sparked off a battle in favour of Marathis.

New Delhi: In what is a bit of an ironic twist to the attacks on the IBN Network offices in Mumbai and Pune on Friday by Shiv Sainiks, a battle in favour of the Marathi manoos has sparked off post the incident.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief, Raj Thackeray has demanded that the BSE make a Marathi website and what is more, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan - who had promised action against the attackers and the masterminds of the attack also seems to be playing the Marathi card.

"More Maharashtrians should be employed in whatever recruitment takes place in the state," Chavan said on Saturday.

His statement came after he had asked Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to employ more Maharashtrians in railways.

"Locals must be given importance. Whoever is a domicile of Maharashtra must first get an employment opportunity irrespective of the language the people of Maharashtra speak or the belief they follow", Chavan had stated.

However, he hastened to add that his government did not support agitations based on language and region. "It is not our policy."

His remarks come against the backdrop of MNS launching a "Marathi manoos" campaign and assault on candidates from North India appearing in railway exams in Maharashtra.

Mamata Banerjee, for her part, said railway recruitment exams will be conducted in regional languages simultaneously with English and Hindi. In Maharashtra, the exams will be held in Marathi and in other states, these will be held in local languages," she told reporters.
