THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Charcha Vedi Babu, the man who thrived on organising discussions, died here late Sunday night of cardiac arrest, Thiruvananthapuram Medical College officials said. He was 67. His wife Ragini and daughter Lakshmi Chitra were at the hospital at the time of death, hospital sources said. Babu was on ventilator at the Medical College since August 24. Death occurred at 11.50 p.m., doctors said. It was on August 19 that Babu was admitted to a private hospital in the city following a massive stroke. The State Government intervened and transferred Babu to the Medical College Hospital on August 24.  Babu lived at Nedungad, Karamana, in a rented house with his small family. Formerly employed at the Secretariat, Babu organised the first meeting of ‘Charcha Vedi,’ which he founded, at the YMCA Hall, Thiruvananthapuram, on December 10, 1970. The topic was ‘Ultra Modern trends in Malayalam.’ If Babu was unique, so were the invitations he sent out to the people to attend the Charcha Vedi meetings. They were hand-written, and beautifully so. By 2008, Charcha Vedi had crossed 1,250 meetings. In fact, Babu was planning to organise meetings to commemorate K M Mathew this month and K P Kesava Menon on September 1.
